Ken Loach seems to completely capture the period and atmosphere of this difficult time in Ireland and his portrayal of the people and issues certainly got the votes of this audience – one of our top-scoring films!
Comments on forms:

  • A rather strong film well worth seeing.
  • Challenging, thought provoking.  Hard life!  Excellent music too.
  • Evocative of a period of (continuing) oppression in Ireland.
  • Very bleakly beautiful.  It would be nice if people did not send text messages during the screening of the film – distracting!

  • It’s hard to dance with the devil on your back.
  • Excellent!
  • Great film – loved it!

Comments on forms:

  • Interesting historically entertaining?

  • Good insight into Chilean situation.  Slow to develop when we knew the end.  Subtitles difficult.

  • Powerful & harrowing.
  • Food for thought.
  • Very thought-provoking (x3).

  • Hard and unremittingly strong to the end and the end was even more difficult – powerful – brilliant frame setting & cutting.  An excellent film.
  • Hard to watch but very moving.
  • Thank goodness it’s finished!
  • Beautifully done but a hard watch.
  • Interesting perspective and convincing film.

This gives an overall Film Reaction Index of 71 (out of total possible score of 100) – a somewhat disappointing score for this well-attended study of different and changing relationships in Los Angeles.  It certainly prompted plenty of audience reaction.  The dog (Arthur) was the clear star of the evening judging by the comments below!

Comments on forms:

  • The dog takes it again!
  • Loved Arthur.
  • Thought-provoking.  The dog lightened what could have been rather an esoterical subject for some people.
  • Unusual.  Left to draw your own conclusions.  I liked the dog!
  • Enjoyed the dog.  Not quite sure where we were!  Very soulful Euan McG!  Lovely eyed Melanie.  Guess they both had difficult family relationships. Christopher Plummer enjoyed himself!
  • A beautifully acted essay in “happy” and “sad”.  The dog wins the Oscar!
  • Quirky, a bit disjointed.  Couldn’t understand a word the girl said.
  • Worth coming – but not memorable.
  • Confusing.com. Great dog.  I’ll take a rain check.
  • Nice dog, nice music.
  • Nothing without the dog.
  • Such a sensitive gentle film.  Are there really any men like that?
  • Rather slow and predictable.
  • Very slow.  Nice dog and music.
  • Good music – nice dog.
  • Still trying to work it out!
  • Unusually philosophical (that’s not really the right word) for a Hollywood film.  Actress who played Anna stunningly lovely – reminded me of Catherine Deneuve all those year ago.
  • Sensitive production but did little to stretch ones imagination or challenge perceptions of American movies.
  • Not my kind of film.
  • Amazing!

This gives an overall Film Reaction Index of 100 (out of total possible score of 100) – and you can’t do better than that!  This is the first time that a film has had top marks since we started collecting feedback – and very well deserved too!

Comments on forms:

  • Really enjoyed it – great acting.
  • Thought film was really good.
  • Subtitles?  Good idea?
  • Very good and quite moving. Good snacks and very entertaining evening – much better than the movies.
  • Very moving.
  • Great choice – more like it!
  • Brilliant! (x2)
  • Excellent film.  Most enjoyable.
  • Wonderful.  Thank you.
  • Great film.  Hated the subtitles – most distracting.
  • True to the book (x3)
  • Really enjoyed it.
  • Powerful & thought provoking.  Superb acting.
  • It only takes one person to start a revolution.
  • A powerful story told with humour and humanity.
  • Love the ambience – love this as a way to watch a film, very comfortable.  Film excellent – moving, well -documented story.  Loved the candlelight.  Thank you.
  • Very good film – nice to see one that keeps so well to the book.  A very enjoyable evening – from a newcomer to DFS.
  • A very strong film – excellent believable characters, does justice to the novel.
  • Very moving, the subtitles really helped.
  • Well worth braving the weather for.
  • Powerful but too long.  Ending sentimental.  Great acting from many.
  • Powerful comment on black/white relations in the 60’s.  Could be edited.  Great performances.
  • Lost for words – wonderful!
  • Once again an excellent film, both moving & amusing.
  • Well written and acted – a good choice.
  • “I told old stories like it really was”.  I reckon so!
  • Read the book – now seen it twice!  So many issues to think about.
  • Brilliant film!

This gives an overall Film Reaction Index of 52 (out of total possible score of 100) – after a very good run of films, this one seemingly failed to attract much of an audience and scored poorly.  Well, in the words of one of the audience – “you can’t win them all!”

Comments on forms:

  • Confusing & unsatisfying.
  • No more cult films!
  • Glad I saw it.
  • Gripping but uncomfortable watching.
  • Not quite as good as I expected but sinister & gripping.  Blurred lines between reality & paranoia.
  • Slowly builds up the tension.
  • Tantalising!  Might just shut my bedroom window tonight!
  • Enjoyed nut confused. (x2)
  • Visually dynamic, shocking, perplexing but, as a piece of dialogue asked....”What the heel’s going on?  Who the f...k knows?”
  • A waste of time & money.  We’ve gone from A+ (The Help) to E.
  • A brooding, complex, uncomfortable film.
  • Dismal – inconclusive ending.
  • Well, where did we get with all that?  Feel the power of the cult is a fierce thing.
  • What was it all about?
  • Fantastic tension & brilliant acting by the MMMM character.
  • Good reviews but I found it disappointing, dark & depressing.  Didn’t enjoy it but you can’t win them all...!

Comments on forms:

  • When do we go?
  • Very enjoyable (x2)
  • Great film.  Improves on acquaintance – can’t wait to see it a third time!
  • Very well done.
  • Brilliant start to the season – may it continue.
  • Fun, colourful, amusing.
  • Makes me want to visit India.
  • I’m booked on the next plane – I wish!  Colourful, touching, funny – great evening’s entertainment.  Good choice chaps!
  • Seen tittwice now – just as good!
  • With a cast like that it can’t fail – thoroughly enjoyed the film.
  • Strange, fascinating, brilliant acting by all.  It also reinforced my desire NOT to go to India – too noisy by half!
  • A good laugh.
  • An excellent entertaining film – well done!
  • Brilliantly amusing yet profound.  Even better on the second showing!
  • Just as joyous seeing it again.  Here’s to silver seniors!
  • Fun, watchable.  Clearer sound?  Little difficult to hear words.  Sub-titles?
  • Mind-blowing and vibrant backdrop.
  • Real feel-good film.
  • India as I imagine – wonderful character much enjoyed.
  • An old fashioned happy ending delightful movie.  Great cast.
  • Real. Sensitive. Joyous and an impressive range of emotions tapped into – rich, denser, funny interactions.  Expectations satisfied, fairy tale to smile with!
  • A lovely look at older life with so many truths.  Excellent acting by Maggie Smith & Judy Dench.

This gives an overall Film Reaction Index of 62 (out of total possible score of 100) – a rather disappointing score for this somewhat unusual and slow-moving portrayal of life through the seasons in a Calabrian village.  A good turnout and lots of comments!

Comments on forms:

  • Brilliant!  Music of the spirits, drive, drama, humour, beauty, reality, cadence & nature elements – gorgeous, cyclical.
  • Unique & enchanting.
  • Almost impossible to classify – I got it in the end.  Brave & rather wonderful.
  • Different – dust to dust.  Good film to follow a funeral!
  • Well –dust to dust – to dust shall we return!  A film apt as we start Lent 2012.
  • Different but brilliant!  I wonder how many takes for those goat sequences?
  • Think I missed something along the way (x2)
  • Appreciate the art but found it a little dull.
  • Worse than watching paint dry!
  • It made me remember how good very simple film-making can be: very powerful ideas & imagery in a peasant environment.
  • Art?
  • Outstanding, delightful.
  • How bizarre but true to life.
  • Had a certain charm.
  • That got my goat!
  • Poor little kid...
  • Very different.
  • Visually rich.
  • Rather strange.
  • Beautiful photography but plot non-existent.  Dog was a star!
  • Photography great plus animals – very different.
  • The emperor’s new clothes?
  • A most unusual film which did not require dialogue.  Wonderful scenery & photography.
  • Interesting!  A bit too racy for me!

This gives an overall Film Reaction Index of 92 (out of total possible score of 100) – an excellent score for this embarrassing exposure of our shameful recent history (however well-motivated).  Another good turnout and no shortage of comments!

Comments on forms:

  • Unbelievable that this happened – do we ever know how much is covered up?
  • Very moving.
  • Really informative.
  • A very interesting film.
  • Very “Loach” – emotional, moving, personal.
  • Harrowing & powerful – a “must see” film.
  • Important the story be told: it was well told.  Some poetic licence perhaps & filmed in a ‘gritty’ style reminiscent of dad (Ken).  A powerful film.
  • Enlightening & moving.
  • Brilliant, sensitive & shocking.
  • A good depiction of our shameful history.
  • Nice weepy because I had a client who was one!  Very sad & appalling.
  • A very powerful & moving film (x2)
  • Very interesting as my best friend’s mother had 2 sisters taken off to Aus.  I remember telling my father & he was in total disbelief – still doesn’t believe me!
  • Normally wouldn’t like a documentary but excellent.
  • A very moving picture but so very sad – what terrible things we do to each other.
  • A heartbreaking story beautifully portrayed.
  • Drama vs. documentary?  The credits list “ Icon Entertainment” – some lack of conviction regarding relationships.  Not a well-structured film – the story, reality, was the power.
  • Thought provoking (x2) – a shocking happening.
  • A grim new dimension to “Wanted Downunder”!  How significant are those early years to our emotional being?
  • A very thought provoking film – commitment to something one believes in is a very hard thing for the family of such a person!
  • Very moving &well made.
  • Thought provoking, well made incredibly sad – and unbelievable it could have been allowed!
  • Could have been a bit shorter – got a bit samey towards the end.  But still, an appalling, fascinating aspect of recent history very well told.
